Traditional metal braces can be more effective at treating extreme overcrowding than Invisalign aligners and are sometimes less costly too. Metal braces also allow smaller increments of movement at a time. The main disadvantages of traditional metal braces are the appearance and cleaning. However, today’s metal braces are more visually appealing than they used to be, with a range of color options for both the brackets and the elastics. Kids might think it’s cool to have these options. Also, with metal braces, they are always on your teeth so there is no danger of misplacing your aligners or worrying about a child being responsible enough to put them back in after eating and brushing.
Taking Care of Your Metal Braces
- Avoid foods that aren’t braces-friendly. Avoid chewy foods, like soft candies or taffy, as well as very hard or crunchy foods, like hard candies or nuts that could damage your braces. Certain fruits and vegetables can get stuck in your braces, like apples, corn on the cob, or carrots, and should be cut into small pieces. We will provide you with a list of foods to avoid so you can keep your braces in good shape.
- Brush and floss appropriately. It’s important to take good care of your teeth, especially when you have braces. Brushing and flossing regularly will keep your braces looking good and help you avoid staining to your teeth. You may decide to use a special brush designed to get into the crevices and different surfaces in metal braces. It may take some practice to learn how to brush and floss around your braces, but we will offer several suggestions to make it an easier process.
- Keep your follow-up appointments. Regular appointments allow us to make any adjustments to the braces plus gives you an opportunity to ask us any questions or concerns you might have. You will probably be wearing your braces for quite a long time, so it is important to care for them properly. While braces may seem like an inconvenience, once the treatment is over, your new smile will be all the reward you need!
